The Long Shop Museum
The museum is opened from March until October
Please note that we are open seven days a week during the high season and school holidays.
- children love to discover the mini-home of our ‘working van’
- loads of clothes to dress up in – perfect for photo-shoots!
- get stuck in and make sand-moulds in our pattern boxes
- trails, jigsaw puzzles and word searches
- garden with a wendy house and space to play
- we’re right next to Leiston’s Recreation Ground with acres of space to run free!
PLUS our shop has snacks and drinks for thirsty/hungry children.
The Long Shop itself – at the heart of the museum – is a Grade II* listed engineering workshop, thought to be one of the earliest purpose-built production lines in existence (made long before Henry Ford had the same idea!), and it’s chock-full of fascinating exhibits.
We also tell of the history of the area, with displays about the nuclear power station at nearby Sizewell and Leiston’s airfield, home to the American 357th Fighter Group, 8th USAAF, during World War II.
It all adds up to a fascinating day out, with something for everyone, and we look forward to welcoming you soon.
Admission charges for the 2016 season will be published here soon.

Inside the museum
There is level access to most of our displays however care is required. Surfaces are sometimes uneven and outside there are some gravelled areas.
The first floor of the Long Shop is only accessible by an original, steep stairway. There are folders on the ground floor which give a flavour of these upstairs displays.
The introductory video has a good commentary and works without being able to see the visuals.

We can bring in an induction loop for group visits and need 2 week’s notice.
