St Elizabeth Hospice announces new virtual Christmas fundraising events
St Elizabeth Hospice has announced the launch of two new virtual fundraising events for supporters to take part in this Christmas.
Following the postponing of the hospice’s Christmas Day Dip 2020, due to Covid-19 safety concerns, the fundraising team have created alternative yuletide fundraisers for the public to enjoy while supporting the hospice.
The virtual activities, Santa Stride ‘n’ Ride and Ice Bucket Challenge, will contribute to the hospice’s Be a Star Christmas appeal. A campaign raising funds for the hospice which will provide vital care for hundreds of people living with progressive and life-limiting illnesses and their families across East Suffolk, Great Yarmouth and Waveney over the Christmas period.
Joanne Rodger, Events and Challenges Manager at St Elizabeth Hospice, said: “Illness doesn’t stop over Christmas and through our Ipswich inpatient unit, our Virtual Ward providing nurses in the community and six specialist palliative care beds in Beccles we will be supporting more than 900 patients and their families over Christmas, during what for some will sadly be their last together
“We hoped to host our popular Christmas Day Dip but due to government guidelines and wanting to maintain the safety of our supporters and staff this is not possible. However, we cannot wait to see supporters sharing videos and photos as they complete their Ice Bucket and Santa Stride ‘n’ Ride challenges!”
Taking place from 16th to 28th December, Santa Stride ‘n’ Ride will see participants take on a virtual fancy dress walk, run or ride in aid of the hospice and share their photos using the #SantaStrideNRide hashtag. There will be no set routes or mile count, fundraisers will have free range to challenge themselves as much as they wish, before receiving medals by post to celebrate their achievements.
While on Christmas Day, St Elizabeth Hospice Ice Bucket Challenge will be held. Swapping the cold North Sea of the traditional Christmas Day Dip for the icy, or in the case of younger fundraisers lukewarm, water. The Ice Bucket Challenge will encourage participants to raise sponsorship and nominate friends and family, using the hashtag #HospIceBucketChallenge, to take part in the virtual event which will see them pour cold water over themselves in aid of the independent Suffolk charity.
In 2019 the hospice cared for more than 3,000 Suffolk patients and their families at a cost of £12.9m, of which 75% was raised by the community through St Elizabeth Hospice’s retail shops and local fundraising activities.
Both of which were hampered during the ongoing pandemic, with fundraising events cancelled and all 31 of the hospice’s shops temporarily closed due to lockdown restrictions, while the announcement of a second lockdown has seen the hospice’s shops close once more, putting further pressure on the charity.
